MANAGEMENT BY OBJECTIVECONCEPT
Is a remarkable phenomena of human history. The simple truth if objectives are to be actionable:
i. They must be clear and verifiable to those who pursue them.
ii. No one can accomplish an ambiguous goal
iii. Goals, actions and when they have to be accomplished must be known by people.
Peter Drucker emphasized that objectives are needed in every area where performance and results, directly and importantly affect the survival and prosperity of the business.
Douglas Mc Gregor, recognizes the fact that it is better to appraise. any organization on the basis of its preset objectives and not on the personal worth of subordinates.
MBO had been identified as a means of integrating individual needs and organizational demands thus individuals becomes more active participant in the managerial process which motivates them. M80 is also viewed as a comprehensive system.
DEFINITION OF MBO
Is a system of managing or appraising managers by verifiable objectives it was realized by managers that without clear objectives, managing becomes haphazard and random, and no individual or group can expect to perform efficiently unless a clear goal is sought.
CHARACTERISTICS OF OBJECTIVE IN MBO
The organizational objectives must be:
Verifiable (S.M.A.R.T.)
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Relevant
Time bound
Such objectives are set for member of health team cleaner, guards. CHA, CHO etc. ..
EXAMPLES OF OBJECTIVES TO BE CRITICIZED:
i. Informing more people of available heal
ii. ii. Select and organise a staff in such a way as to best accomplish the department objectives.
ADVANTAGES OF MB0
1. Planning for result and not mere planning.
2. MBO tends to force clarification of organizational roles and structures.
3. MBO elicits commitment for performance workers no longer just do work following instructions and waiting for guidance 1 and decision. They are know individuals with clearly defined purposes. They also take part in setting the organizational goals and objectives.
4. MBO helps develop effective control: MBO ensures effective control because it ensures a clear set of goals and Objectives which serve best as guide to knowing when desired accomplishment are made.
DISADVANTAGES OF MBO
Disadvantages result from the system itself and its application namely:
1. Failure to teach the philosophy: As simple as MBO appears, there is much to be understood and appreciated by managers who would want to put it into practice. They need to know what it is, how it works, why it is being down and how participants can benefit.
2. Failure to give goal setters guideline will result into MBO failing. .
3Goals are difficult to set. This refers to goals that are SMART.
4Goals tend to be short, run; long term goals are not easily applicable to MBO type.
5. The dangers of inflexibility: MBO managers hesitate to change objectives during the specified period of time.
6. Setting of Arbitrary goal for subordinate is one reasons for failure of MBO.
7. Failure to insist on vendible goals and objectives.
8. The use of inapplicable standards during appraisal in MBO.
